Stormwater System Expansion at Pickering Nuclear Waste Facility
Official title: Ontario Power Generation Inc. - Environmental Compliance Approval (sewage)
Ontario Power Generation wants to expand the stormwater drainage system at its nuclear waste storage facility in Pickering. The expansion would handle runoff from two new storage buildings and a security kiosk, covering about 6.4 hectares. Stormwater would be filtered and discharged into Lake Ontario through an existing outfall.
Why This Matters
Live near the Pickering nuclear station? This affects how stormwater from the expanding waste facility reaches Lake Ontario. The water gets filtered before discharge, but residents may want to weigh in on whether the safeguards are adequate.
What Could Change
If approved, OPG can build new storm sewers, ditches, and filtration systems to handle runoff from the expanded facility. The amendment also removes previously approved features that were never built when an earlier building project was cancelled.
Key Issues
- Is the proposed stormwater filtration system adequate to protect Lake Ontario water quality?
- Should the environmental approval be amended to add new drainage infrastructure for the expanded waste facility?
