Lexington Road Redesign for Safer Walking and Cycling - Waterloo
Official title: Lexington Road Complete Streets Study
Why This Matters
Live on or near Lexington Road? This affects your daily commute. Drivers currently speed through at 54-63 km/h in a 50 zone. The redesign aims to slow traffic and make it safer to walk or bike to schools, transit, and local shops. If you cycle, the new multi-use path will connect to the Walter Bean Trail.
What Could Change
Lexington Road will be narrowed with new pedestrian islands and crossovers. A multi-use path on the north side will connect to the Walter Bean Trail and the planned Davenport Road path. Turn lanes will be added at key intersections. Construction depends on future budget approval.
Key Issues
- How should the street be redesigned to reduce speeding?
- What cycling and pedestrian infrastructure is needed?
- How can collision-prone intersections be made safer?
How to Participate
- Review the Lexington Road plan showing proposed multi-use paths and sidewalks.
- Review the public meeting presentation from June 10, 2025.

What Happened
In September 2025, City Council approved the preferred design for Lexington Road. The approved plan includes narrowed streets for traffic calming, pedestrian islands and crossovers, turn lanes, a multi-use path on the north side, and landscaping. The project is now in the detailed design phase, expected to complete in spring 2026.
