Lexington Road Redesign: Safer Streets for Walking and Cycling in Waterloo

Official title: Lexington Road Complete Streets Study

Closed Community Planning Housing & Communities Transportation
The City of Waterloo has approved a new design for Lexington Road between Davenport Road and University Avenue. The plan narrows the road from 11m to 7m to slow traffic, adds a multi-use path on the north side for walking and cycling, and includes new pedestrian crossovers. Construction timing isn't set yet—staff will look at budget options once detailed design wraps up in spring 2026.

Why This Matters

Live on or near Lexington Road? This redesign will change how you get around. Drivers currently speed through at 54-63 km/h in a 50 zone. The narrower road should slow things down. Parents walking kids to school or seniors heading to Hygate residence will get safer crossings and a dedicated path separated from traffic.

Key Issues

  • How will the narrower road design affect traffic flow and driveway access?
  • What is the impact of the multi-use path on trees and landscaping?
  • How will pedestrian crossings be improved at key locations?

How to Participate

  1. Review the Lexington Road plan showing proposed multi-use paths, sidewalks, and landscaping.
  2. Email questions or feedback to christopher.hodgson@waterloo.ca.
  3. Follow this project page for updates on public meetings and design progress.

What Happened

City Council approved the preferred design in September 2025. The plan includes a narrowed roadway (from 11m to 7m), a multi-use path on the north side, pedestrian crossovers, and new turn lanes. Detailed design is underway through spring 2026. Construction timing will be determined during the next budget cycle.
