Shoreline Erosion Protection at Annacis Island
Official title: Annacis Island shoreline rehabilitation
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority wants to reinforce about 5,400 square metres of shoreline at Annacis Island to prevent erosion. The work includes removing invasive plants, installing new rock protection and concrete slabs, and planting native vegetation to offset environmental impacts.
Why This Matters
Live or work near Annacis Island in Delta? Construction noise could happen outside normal hours due to tides. The project will remove some trees but aims to preserve 80% of mature trees originally slated for removal. Native plants will replace invasive species along the shoreline.
What Could Change
If approved, the port authority will install new erosion protection including riprap and 1,700 square metres of concrete slabs. About 450 metres of new vegetated shoreline will be created, and 925 metres of existing vegetation will be restored with native plants.
Key Issues
- Will the erosion protection measures adequately protect the shoreline long-term?
- Are the environmental offsets sufficient to compensate for tree removal and habitat disturbance?
- How will construction outside standard hours affect nearby residents?
