Sewage Treatment Permit for Darlington Nuclear Tunnel Boring Project

Official title: Aecon Construction Group Inc and Kiewit Nuclear Canada Corp. carrying on business under the general partnership firm name Aecon - Environmental Compliance Approval (sewage)

Open Regulations & Permits Environment & Climate Natural Resources
Aecon and Kiewit want a permit to treat and discharge water from tunnel boring at the Darlington nuclear site. The tunnel boring machine will run 24/7 on weekdays for about a year. Treated water goes into the existing stormwater system or gets recycled back to the machine.

Why This Matters

Live near Bowmanville or the Darlington nuclear station? This permit affects what gets discharged into local waterways during construction. The project runs around the clock on weekdays, so noise and activity could affect nearby residents too.

What Could Change

If approved, Aecon-Kiewit can discharge up to 40 cubic metres of treated water per hour into the stormwater system. The ministry will set effluent limits and monitoring requirements to control what goes into the water.

Key Issues

  • Should the permit be approved for treating and discharging construction water from tunnel boring?
  • What effluent limits and monitoring should be required?
