Protected Bike Lanes on Bertram Street in Downtown Kelowna
Official title: Bertram Active Transportation Corridor
Why This Matters
Bike downtown? This route will make it safer to get from the south end to Cawston without mixing with traffic. Live or work on Bertram? Expect construction in 2026 and some parking changes. Even if you drive, fewer cyclists on the road means smoother traffic flow.
What Could Change
Parking spaces on Bertram between Bernard and Lawrence will be eliminated. A new all-way stop goes in at Lawrence Avenue. Signal timing at Bernard will separate bikes from cars. Construction starts in 2026 for most segments.
Key Issues
- How should the bike lanes connect to the new Bertram Multiuse Overpass?
- Is removing parking on Bertram Street acceptable to create protected bike lanes?
- What design best balances cyclist safety with vehicle access?

What Happened
The engagement period has concluded. Feedback from participants has been compiled into an Engagement Summary report. The project is now moving to detailed design in Fall 2025, with construction for segments A, C, and D anticipated to begin in 2026. Segment B construction was completed in Spring 2025.
