MAX Purple Bus Rapid Transit Extension to East Calgary
Official title: MAX Purple
Why This Matters
Live in East Calgary? This could cut your commute time downtown. The extension would bring faster, more reliable bus service to underserved neighbourhoods between Inglewood and International Avenue. Stations would have heated shelters, real-time arrival info, and better walking and cycling connections.
What Could Change
If approved and funded, dedicated bus lanes would be built along 17 Avenue SE from 54 Street to 116 Street. New MAX stations would be added with heated shelters, CCTV cameras, and real-time displays. A new bus terminal near 100 Street SE would serve as a hub for local and regional connections. Detailed design could start in 2026.
Key Issues
- Where should new bus stations be located along the corridor?
- How can pedestrian and cyclist access to stations be improved?
- What transit priority measures would best improve service reliability?
- How should the extension connect with future transit services to Chestermere?
How to Participate

What Happened
The city gathered feedback during the Discover Phase in early 2025 and used it to develop the recommended plan. Key themes from public input included support for the project, interest in improving safety, requests for better bus service reliability and frequency, and concerns about accessibility and snow clearing. The feedback helped shape station locations and design priorities.
