Speed Limit Reductions in Waterloo Neighbourhoods

Official title: Speed management: safe streets for all

Closed Community Planning Housing & Communities Transportation
Waterloo has lowered speed limits across the city to improve road safety. School zones are now 30 km/h, and most neighbourhood streets are 40 km/h. The uptown ward (Ward 7) has even lower limits at 30 km/h on local roads. Implementation wrapped up in Summer 2025.

Why This Matters

Drive through Waterloo? You'll need to slow down. School zones are now 30 km/h, and neighbourhood streets are 40 km/h. If you live in the uptown ward, local roads are even slower at 30 km/h. The goal is fewer crashes and safer streets for kids, cyclists, and pedestrians.

What Could Change

The changes are already implemented. Speed limits have been reduced city-wide: 30 km/h in all school zones, 40 km/h on local roads in Wards 1-6, and 30 km/h on local roads in Ward 7. Minor collector roads are now 40 km/h and major collectors remain at 50 km/h.

All school zones are now 30 km/h, neighbourhood streets in Wards 1-6 are 40 km/h, and Ward 7 local roads are 30 km/h. Survey results are available documenting public feedback received during the consultation.
