Landfill Gas Collection Expansion at Eastern Ontario Waste Handling Facility
Official title: GFL Environmental Inc. - Environmental Compliance Approval (waste)
GFL Environmental wants to expand its landfill gas collection system at a large waste facility near North Stormont. The expansion would add new gas extraction wells to capture methane from two new landfill stages. This is a routine permit amendment for an existing facility that already handles up to 4,000 tonnes of waste daily.
Why This Matters
Live near North Stormont or along Laflèche Road? This landfill is one of the largest in Eastern Ontario. Capturing landfill gas reduces odours and greenhouse gas emissions. If you're concerned about how the facility operates, this is your chance to comment.
What Could Change
If approved, GFL can install new vertical gas extraction wells in stages 5 and 6 of the landfill. New leachate management rules would also apply, keeping liquid levels below 1.5 metres over the base clay. The facility's overall capacity and operations remain unchanged.
Key Issues
- Should the landfill gas collection system be expanded into stages 5 and 6?
- Are the proposed leachate level limits (1.5 metres) adequate to protect groundwater?
