Alberta gathered input on how to spend $120 million over 5 years to build affordable rental housing for Indigenous peoples living off-reserve. The province held listening sessions in 2017 to understand who needs housing most, where it's needed, and what it should look like.

Why This Matters

Indigenous peoples living off-reserve face some of the worst housing conditions in Alberta. If you're Indigenous and struggling to find affordable rent, this program was designed with your needs in mind. The feedback shaped how $120 million gets spent on new housing units.

What Could Change

The feedback led to a redesigned Indigenous Housing Capital Program launched in 2020. New affordable rental units are being built specifically for Indigenous peoples living off-reserve across Alberta.

Key Issues

  • Who is most in need of off-reserve affordable rental housing?
  • Where is off-reserve affordable rental housing most needed in Alberta?
  • What characteristics should off-reserve affordable rental housing have?

What Happened

Indigenous organizations and Indigenous-serving organizations participated in a provincewide listening tour in June 2017. The feedback helped identify who needs housing most, where it's needed, and what characteristics the housing should have. This input informed the development of the Indigenous Housing Capital Program, which was redesigned and relaunched in July 2020.
