Help Shape Forest Management in the Cranbrook Region
Official title: Cranbrook Forest Landscape Plan
BC and First Nations are partnering to create a new forest management plan for 1.2 million hectares in southeastern BC. Right now, they want to know if you're interested in being involved as the plan develops. The area covers Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie, Sparwood, and Elkford.
Why This Matters
Live in the Kootenays? This plan will shape how forests near you are managed for decades. It affects logging, recreation, wildlife habitat, and wildfire risk. Indigenous leadership is central to this process—a shift in how BC does forestry.
What Could Change
The plan will set new rules for how 808,000 cubic metres of timber can be harvested annually. It could designate areas for conservation, recreation, or cultural protection. Forest licensees may face new requirements balancing economic, cultural, and environmental goals.
Key Issues
- What forest values matter most to local residents?
- How should economic, cultural, and conservation objectives be balanced?
- Who wants to be involved in ongoing feedback as the plan develops?
How to Participate
- Learn about the Cranbrook Timber Supply Area and current forestry context by reviewing the TSA information page.
- Complete the survey on the consultation page to share your forest values and indicate your interest in future involvement.
