Help Shape Alberta's 10-Year Tourism Strategy

Official title: 10-year tourism strategy engagement

Closed Policy & Studies Economy & Jobs
Alberta developed a 10-year plan to grow tourism revenue to $20 billion by 2030. Over 400 industry partners attended workshops in Calgary and Edmonton in January 2020, and more than 600 people completed a survey. The engagement identified 8 key themes including environmental sustainability, shoulder season growth, and moving visitors around the province.

Why This Matters

Work in tourism or hospitality? This strategy shapes how Alberta invests in the industry for the next decade. Even if you're just a visitor, it affects which destinations get developed and how easy it is to travel around the province.

What Could Change

Alberta could invest more in shoulder season attractions to spread tourism beyond summer. New programs might help move visitors between destinations. The province aims to double tourism revenue to $20 billion by 2030.

Key Issues

  • How can the province enhance support for the tourism industry?
  • How can tourism grow during shoulder seasons (spring and fall)?
  • How can visitors be moved more easily around the province?
  • How can tourism be both economically and environmentally sustainable?

What Happened

Over 400 industry partners attended stakeholder engagement workshops in Calgary and Edmonton from January 13-16, 2020. More than 600 people completed the stakeholder engagement survey. Eight key themes were identified: enhanced support for the industry, need for community input, economic sustainability, environmental sustainability, shoulder season growth, continued industry collaboration, highlighting the value of tourism, and moving visitors around the province.
