Help Design a New Stormwater Pond for Meadowlane Park
Official title: Your Meadowlane Park, your watershed
Kitchener wants to add a stormwater pond to Meadowlane Park to reduce flooding and improve water quality in Sandrock Creek. Right now, 75% of runoff in the city flows untreated into local creeks. The new pond would catch water before it rushes into the creek, let sediment settle out, and release cleaner water slowly. Construction is expected to start in late spring or summer 2025.
Why This Matters
Live near Meadowlane Park? This project will change how the park looks and functions. If your street floods during heavy rain, this pond could help. Climate change means more intense storms are coming—this is part of how Kitchener is preparing.
What Could Change
A new stormwater pond will be built in Meadowlane Park, changing the park's layout. The pond will intercept runoff from a 1.25-square-kilometre area before it reaches Sandrock Creek. If community feedback requires changes, the city may amend the Class Environmental Assessment that approved this project.
Key Issues
- How should the stormwater pond design fit into current park uses?
- What safety measures are needed around the new pond?
- What planting and landscaping would work best for the site?
How to Participate
- Review the final design presentation boards and site plan to understand the proposed changes.
- Watch the project videos for an overview of the stormwater management approach.
- Register for the Nature in Your Neighbourhood walking tour to see the site and ask questions in person.
- Email your feedback to sarah.anderson@kitchener.ca with your ideas or concerns about the design.
