Should Alberta Leave the Canada Pension Plan?

Official title: Alberta Pension Plan engagement

Closed Policy & Studies Economy & Jobs Finance & Consumer
Alberta is asking residents whether the province should create its own pension plan and withdraw from the Canada Pension Plan. An independent panel gathered feedback through surveys and town halls. The first phase of engagement is now complete.

Why This Matters

If you work in Alberta, this could change your retirement. The CPP you've paid into for years might be replaced with something new. Your pension contributions, benefits, and portability across provinces could all be affected.

What Could Change

Alberta could establish its own provincial pension plan, separate from the CPP. This would mean new contribution rates, different benefit calculations, and a separate pension fund managed by Alberta. Workers moving between provinces might face complications with their pension credits.

Key Issues

  • Should Alberta withdraw from the Canada Pension Plan?
  • What should an Alberta Pension Plan look like?
  • How would a provincial pension plan benefit Albertans?

How to Participate

What Happened

More than 94,000 Albertans completed the online survey between September 21 and December 10, 2023. Over 760,000 Albertans participated in 5 telephone town hall sessions. The panel is now analyzing the feedback received.
