Power Infrastructure Upgrades at Trial Islands Lightstation

Official title: Trial Islands Lightstation - Primary and Secondary Power Upgrades

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate Transportation
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is replacing aging electrical infrastructure at the Trial Islands Lightstation near Victoria. The work includes new power cables, concrete duct banks, and a BC Hydro meter. All materials will be transported by helicopter to minimize ground disturbance on this remote island site.

Why This Matters

This is routine maintenance on a remote lighthouse. Unless you're a boater relying on the Trial Islands light or live nearby in Victoria, this won't affect your daily life. The project does include protections for species at risk in the area.

What Could Change

The lightstation will get reliable power infrastructure. Construction will be timed to avoid disturbing species at risk, with an environmental monitor overseeing the work. Ground disturbance is minimal—just a few anchor points and a short cable trench.

Key Issues

  • Will the construction activities adequately protect species at risk on the islands?
  • Are the dust suppression and waste containment measures sufficient for this sensitive site?
