Riverbank Stabilization Project for Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation

Official title: Roseau River AFN Riverbank Stabilization Project

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate Indigenous & Northern
Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation needs to stabilize eroding riverbanks at two sites: a community cemetery and a Red River outfall location. The dike protecting the cemetery had to be moved after repeated slope failures. This project would reinforce about 23,600 square metres of riverbank near the Manitoba-US border.

Why This Matters

This project protects a First Nation community's cemetery from erosion and flooding. The dike system also manages flood water for the entire community. If you live in southern Manitoba near the Red River, flood protection infrastructure affects everyone downstream.

What Could Change

If approved, construction would stabilize riverbanks at two sites totalling 23,600 square metres. The existing dike and outfall system would be reinforced to prevent future slope failures. This could improve flood protection for the community.

Key Issues

  • How should riverbanks be stabilized to protect the community cemetery?
  • What environmental impacts might result from stabilization work near the Red River?
