Breakwater Repair at Rivière-au-Renard Fishing Harbour
Official title: Main Breakwater Repair at Rivière-au-Renard Harbour
Fisheries and Oceans Canada needs to repair the main breakwater at Rivière-au-Renard harbour in Gaspésie. Two breaches and significant erosion mean the structure no longer protects the harbour from Gulf of St. Lawrence storms. The project also extends stone protection for Wharf 401, which has foundation scouring issues.
Why This Matters
Live in Rivière-au-Renard or fish out of this harbour? The breakwater is failing. Strong storms already send waves over the top, threatening boats, harbour infrastructure, and nearby roads and buildings. Climate change is making waves stronger.
What Could Change
The breakwater will be reinforced with larger dolos concrete blocks designed to handle stronger waves from climate change and rising sea levels. A temporary access road will be built for construction. Wharf 401 gets extended stone protection and a concrete block wall.
Key Issues
- Should the breakwater repair project proceed as proposed?
- Are the environmental impacts of construction acceptable?
