Alberta gathered input from Indigenous organizations to shape a $120 million affordable housing program. The province held listening tours in 2017 to understand where housing is most needed and what it should look like. This engagement is now complete.

Why This Matters

Indigenous peoples living off-reserve often face serious housing challenges. This program aimed to create more affordable rental units specifically for Indigenous families and individuals in need across Alberta.

What Could Change

The $120 million investment over 5 years funded new affordable rental housing units for Indigenous peoples. The listening tour shaped program criteria including who qualifies, where units are built, and what features they include.

Key Issues

  • Who is most in need of off-reserve affordable rental housing?
  • Where is off-reserve affordable rental housing most needed?
  • What characteristics should the off-reserve affordable rental housing have?

What Happened

Indigenous organizations and Indigenous-serving organizations participated in a provincewide listening tour in June 2017. The feedback helped the government understand housing needs, priority locations, and desired housing characteristics. Results informed the development of the Indigenous Housing Capital Program, which was redesigned and announced in July 2020.
