Military Bridge Training Site Construction at CFB Edmonton

Official title: Design and Construct Dry Gap Bridge Training Aide, Canadian Forces Base Edmonton

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate
The Department of National Defence wants to build a 7,500 m² training site at CFB Edmonton where soldiers can practice building temporary bridges. The site would include reinforced earth berms with gaps of different widths (15m, 20m, 30m) that soldiers would bridge using military equipment. It's located near a wetland area, about 50 metres away.

Why This Matters

Live near CFB Edmonton? Heavy military vehicles will be operating at this new training site. The construction is close to a wetland, so there could be environmental impacts to watch. If you care about how military bases use land in Alberta, this is your chance to weigh in.

What Could Change

If approved, DND would clear natural vegetation on a vacant site next to the runway. Precast concrete blocks would form permanent berms. Heavy armoured vehicles would regularly use the site for bridge training exercises.

Key Issues

  • What are the potential impacts on the nearby wetland area?
  • Are the proposed spill prevention measures adequate for heavy vehicle operations?
