Diesel Fuel Tank Replacement at Quatsino Lightstation

Official title: Quatsino Lightstation - Diesel Fuel System Replacement

Closed Environmental Assessment Natural Resources Transportation
Fisheries and Oceans Canada wants to replace aging diesel fuel tanks at the Cape Scott Lightstation on Vancouver Island. The project swaps out four old 9,465-litre tanks for new ones in the exact same spot. No ground disturbance is expected since everything sits above ground. Helicopters will fly materials in from Coal Harbour.

Why This Matters

This is routine infrastructure maintenance at a remote lighthouse. It keeps the station running for the two lightkeepers who live there year-round. Unless you're a mariner relying on Cape Scott's navigation services, this won't affect your daily life.

What Could Change

The lightstation gets new fuel tanks to keep its generators running. The old tanks get removed. No changes to operations or services are expected.

Key Issues

  • Is the tank replacement project environmentally sound given the remote coastal location?
  • Are there concerns about helicopter operations or fuel handling at the site?
