Should Alberta Expand School Choice Options for Parents?
Official title: Choice in education engagement
Alberta asked parents and residents what they thought about education choices in the province. The survey covered public schools, separate schools, francophone schools, charter schools, private schools, and home education. Over 50,000 people responded before the survey closed in December 2019.
Why This Matters
Have kids in school or thinking about it? This shaped how much say you have in where they learn. The results influenced a law that protects parents' right to choose between public, private, charter, or home schooling.
What Could Change
The Choice in Education Act passed in June 2020 and took effect September 1, 2020. It enshrined parents' right to choose their children's education path in Alberta law.
Key Issues
- Are parents satisfied with the current range of school choices in Alberta?
- Is enough information available to help parents make informed school choices?
- How can education choice be protected and enhanced?
What Happened
More than 50,000 Albertans participated in the survey. Results showed 62% were satisfied with the amount of educational choice, and 59% were satisfied with information available about school choice. The feedback informed the Choice in Education Act, which passed June 24, 2020 and came into effect September 1, 2020.
