Should a 500 MW Natural Gas Power Plant Be Built Near Sarnia?

Official title: Riverside Generating Station Project

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate Natural Resources
Atura Power wants to build a natural gas power plant about 16 kilometres south of Sarnia in St. Clair Township. The facility would generate up to 500 megawatts of electricity and operate for at least 20 years. It would include a combustion turbine, a 230-kilovolt transmission line, and water infrastructure.

Why This Matters

Live near Sarnia or St. Clair Township? This plant could affect local air quality and noise levels for the next two decades. It also means new transmission lines through the area. On the flip side, it could bring jobs and help meet Ontario's growing electricity demand.

What Could Change

If approved, Atura Power could build and operate a 500 MW gas-fired power plant for at least 20 years. New transmission infrastructure would connect to the provincial grid. Environmental conditions may be imposed on air emissions, water use, and noise.

Key Issues

  • What are the air quality and emissions impacts of a new gas-fired plant?
  • How will the project affect local water resources?
  • What are the impacts of new transmission infrastructure on the community?
