Housing Subdivision on Wahnapitae First Nation Reserve

Official title: Wahnapitae FN Micro Subdivision Project

Closed Environmental Assessment Housing & Communities Indigenous & Northern
Wahnapitae First Nation wanted to build a small housing subdivision on their reserve near Lake Wanapitei in Ontario. The project would cover about 30,000 square metres of forested land. Indigenous Services Canada reviewed the environmental impacts and determined the project won't cause significant harm. The public comment period is now closed.

Why This Matters

This project addresses housing needs for an Indigenous community with limited on-reserve housing. About 200 band members currently live off-reserve, partly due to housing shortages. New homes could help community members return to their traditional territory.

What Could Change

The environmental assessment has been completed and the project was approved. The First Nation can now proceed with developing the subdivision, which will include measures to protect migratory birds and species at risk during construction.

Key Issues

  • Will the subdivision harm migratory birds or species at risk?
  • What environmental effects will clearing the forested site have?

What Happened

Indigenous Services Canada completed its environmental review and issued a Notice of Determination. The project was found not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, clearing the way for the subdivision development to proceed.
