Green Demolition of Historic Barn and Silo at Orléans Fruit Farm

Official title: 1501 St. Joseph Blvd. Barn & Silo Demolition

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate Housing & Communities
The National Capital Commission wants to tear down a deteriorating barn and silo on a working farm in Ottawa's Greenbelt. The structures have been unsafe since 2006. This will be a 'green demolition' - 97% of materials will be recycled, and the site will be replanted with wildflowers for pollinators.

Why This Matters

Live near St. Joseph Boulevard in Orléans? You might notice this familiar barn disappear this fall. The site is part of the popular Orléans Fruit Farm where families pick berries and buy local produce. Heritage buffs may care - the structures date back decades.

What Could Change

The barn and silo will be demolished in fall 2025, taking about two weeks. The site will be graded and seeded with native wildflowers. A heritage recording has been completed to document the structures before removal.
