Help Shape How the Federal Government Buys from Indigenous Businesses

Official title: Developing a Transformative Approach to Indigenous Procurement

Closed Policy & Studies Economy & Jobs Indigenous & Northern
The federal government wants to buy more goods and services from Indigenous-owned businesses. Right now, departments must award at least 5% of contract value to Indigenous businesses. This consultation is co-developing a longer-term strategy with Indigenous partners to expand these opportunities further.

Why This Matters

Own an Indigenous business? This could mean more federal contracts coming your way. The government spends billions annually on procurement. Getting a bigger slice of that pie could help Indigenous businesses grow and create jobs in their communities.

What Could Change

The 5% minimum target for Indigenous procurement could increase. The definition of what counts as an Indigenous business may expand. New geographic set-asides could require federal buyers to consider Indigenous suppliers first in more regions.

Key Issues

  • How can Indigenous businesses build capacity to compete for federal contracts?
  • What changes to procurement rules would support economic reconciliation?
  • What goods and services can Indigenous businesses provide to federal departments?
