Road Salt Storage Facility at La Mauricie National Park

Official title: Storage area for road salts and abrasives

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate Transportation
La Mauricie National Park wants to build a new storage facility for road salt and sand used in winter maintenance. The facility would be built in part of the Rivière-à-la-Pêche pavilion parking lot, near the existing maintenance garage. This would help the park manage snow removal operations in the Saint-Jean-des-Piles and Rivière-à-la-Pêche areas.

Why This Matters

Visit La Mauricie in winter? This project aims to keep park roads safer. Road salt storage in a national park also raises environmental questions—salt runoff can affect nearby waterways and wildlife habitat.

What Could Change

A new salt and sand storage facility would be built in the Rivière-à-la-Pêche parking lot. This means fewer parking spaces during construction and permanently. Winter road maintenance in the park could become more efficient.

Key Issues

  • Is the Rivière-à-la-Pêche parking lot an appropriate location for salt storage?
  • What environmental protections are needed for salt storage in a national park?
