Restoring Bird Habitat Islands in Hamilton Harbour
Official title: Rehabilitation of Bird Habitat Islands - Hamilton Harbour, Ontario
Four artificial islands in Hamilton Harbour are eroding due to rising water levels. Built in 1997 for bird nesting habitat, they've lost surface area to flooding. This project will rebuild and raise the islands to their original 1.5-hectare size, adding armour stone protection against waves.
Why This Matters
Live near Hamilton Harbour or enjoy birdwatching there? These islands support terns, herons, and other colonial waterbirds. The restoration work will happen between September 2025 and March 2026, so you might see barges and construction equipment in the harbour.
What Could Change
The four islands will be rebuilt to 1.5 hectares total with raised elevations and stone armouring. Construction will use barges to deliver limestone, sand, and gravel. Work is timed to avoid fish spawning (March-July) and bird nesting (March-August) periods.
Key Issues
- Will the construction methods adequately protect fish habitat during in-water work?
- Are the proposed timing windows sufficient to avoid disturbing nesting birds and spawning fish?
