Milk River Fish Recovery Plan - Protecting Threatened Species

Official title: Milk River Fish Recovery Plan engagement

Closed Policy & Studies Environment & Climate Natural Resources
Alberta gathered feedback on a plan to protect three threatened fish species in the St. Mary and Milk Rivers. The Stonecat, Western Silvery Minnow, and Rocky Mountain Sculpin have extremely limited ranges in Canada. The consultation helped shape the final recovery plan.

Why This Matters

These three fish species exist almost nowhere else in Canada. If they disappear from southern Alberta's rivers, they're gone from the country. Water management decisions and invasive species threaten their survival.

What Could Change

The recovery plan sets out specific actions to protect fish habitat in the Milk and St. Mary Rivers. This could affect water management practices and efforts to control invasive species in the region.

Key Issues

  • How to protect habitat from water management activities?
  • How to prevent introduction of invasive species?
  • What measures are needed to conserve these species within their current ranges?

How to Participate

What Happened

Feedback was collected through an online survey from July 27 to August 29, 2021. Indigenous communities were also invited to share input. The feedback was used to finalize the Alberta recovery plan for at-risk fish species in the Milk and St. Mary Rivers.
