Help Shape Alberta's 10-Year Tourism Strategy

Official title: 10-year tourism strategy engagement

Closed Policy & Studies Economy & Jobs
Alberta is developing a long-term plan to grow tourism revenue to $20 billion by 2030. The government held workshops and surveys in early 2020 to gather industry input on destination development and management. Over 1,000 people participated through in-person sessions and an online survey.

Why This Matters

Work in tourism or hospitality? This strategy could shape job opportunities and business support for the next decade. Even if you don't, tourism affects local services, traffic, and community character across Alberta.

What Could Change

New programs could support tourism businesses during slow seasons. The province may invest in moving visitors between destinations more easily. Environmental sustainability requirements for tourism operators could be introduced.

Key Issues

  • How can the province better support tourism businesses?
  • How should Alberta balance tourism growth with environmental sustainability?
  • What's needed to attract visitors during shoulder seasons?
  • How can visitors move more easily around the province?

What Happened

Over 400 industry partners attended workshops in Calgary and Edmonton from January 13-16, 2020. More than 600 people completed the stakeholder engagement survey. Eight key themes emerged from the Travel Alberta Industry Conference in October 2019: enhanced industry support, community input, economic and environmental sustainability, shoulder season growth, industry collaboration, highlighting tourism value, and improving visitor mobility.
