New Waterfront Deck at East Wharf Near Parliament Hill

Official title: East Wharf Shoreline Deck and Stabilization Project

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate Housing & Communities
The National Capital Commission wants to build a multi-level wooden deck stepping down to the Ottawa River, right beside the Rideau Canal locks and across from Parliament Hill. The deck would be about 15 by 11 meters and let people fish, gather, and enjoy the views. Construction would also fix an eroded shoreline section and realign a nearby pathway.

Why This Matters

Love fishing or hanging out by the water in downtown Ottawa? This deck would give you a new spot right beside a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's one of the most visible locations in the capital—across from Parliament Hill. If you use the pathways near Major's Hill Park, construction will affect your route this summer.

What Could Change

A new wooden deck with multiple levels would be built on NCC land, stepping down to the water's edge. The eroded shoreline would be stabilized with riprap. A section of the multi-use pathway would be demolished and realigned. Fisheries and Oceans Canada may issue requirements to protect fish habitat during construction.

Key Issues

  • Should a multi-level deck be built on this UNESCO World Heritage Site shoreline?
  • How should the eroded shoreline be rehabilitated?
  • What measures are needed to protect fish habitat during construction?
