What Should Cornerstone Regional Park Include?

Official title: Cornerstone Regional Park

Closed Community Planning Environment & Climate Housing & Communities
Calgary built a new regional park in the northeast Cornerstone community. The City asked residents what amenities they wanted—playgrounds, sports fields, spray parks, or gathering spaces. The consultation is now closed, and final concepts have been developed based on public feedback.

Why This Matters

Live in northeast Calgary? This park is coming to your neighbourhood. Families wanted multigenerational spaces where grandparents and kids can hang out together. The design includes protected wetlands, boardwalks, and active recreation areas.

What Could Change

The park will include a mix of amenities based on what residents asked for: family-friendly gathering spaces, areas for events and celebrations, and both active and passive recreation options. Most of the park is protected wetland with boardwalks and trails. The final design balances public input with budget and environmental considerations.

Key Issues

  • Should the main park area have one large amenity (like a cricket pitch) or multiple smaller amenities (spray park, playground, pavilion)?
  • What mix of active recreation (sports, fitness) and passive spaces (seating, shade) do residents want?
  • How should sloped areas be used—bike park, snow features, amphitheatre, or climbing wall?

How to Participate

  1. Review the What We Heard Report to see how public feedback shaped the final concepts.
  2. Read the What We Did Report to understand how themes were incorporated into the design.
  3. For questions about park construction, contact Anthem Developers or email engage@calgary.ca.

What Happened

The consultation ran from November 1 to December 15, 2023. Residents overwhelmingly wanted community and family-friendly spaces suitable for all ages and abilities. Three key themes emerged: multigenerational gathering spaces, areas for events and food preparation in various sizes, and a mix of active and passive recreation options for year-round use. Final concepts were developed incorporating these themes alongside design principles, site constraints, and budget considerations.
