Water and Wastewater Upgrades for Sturgeon Landing - Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation
Official title: Sturgeon Weir Water and Wastewater Upgrades
Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation wants to expand their wastewater lagoon and upgrade their water treatment plant to serve Sturgeon Landing for the next 20 years. The lagoon expansion would add about 7 hectares on Manitoba crown land, while the water plant upgrades happen on the Saskatchewan side of the reserve. Both projects need environmental approvals.
Why This Matters
Live in Sturgeon Landing or nearby? This project would improve drinking water quality and wastewater treatment for the community. The construction will source clay from a borrow pit 3.5 km away, which could affect local roads and traffic temporarily.
What Could Change
If approved, the wastewater lagoon would double in capacity with a two-cell system on 7 hectares. The water treatment plant would get new mechanical and electrical systems, a backup generator, and two new wells. Forested buffers would be maintained around the lagoon edges.
Key Issues
- Should the wastewater lagoon expansion on Manitoba crown land be approved?
- What environmental protections are needed for the lagoon expansion?
- Are the proposed water treatment plant upgrades adequate for 20-year population growth?
