Surrey Music Strategy - Building a Music City

Official title: Surrey Music Strategy

Closed Policy & Studies Economy & Jobs Housing & Communities
Surrey developed a strategy to grow its local music scene and economy. The city consulted musicians, venues, and residents to figure out how to support artists, create more performance spaces, and attract music tourism. The strategy is now complete with seven pillars covering everything from talent development to municipal leadership.

Why This Matters

Are you a musician in Surrey trying to get gigs? This strategy aims to create more venues and opportunities for local artists. Even if you just love live music, this could mean more concerts and festivals in your neighbourhood. About 62% of Surrey residents already engage with music regularly.

What Could Change

The city will implement recommendations across seven areas: supporting local talent, improving access to performance spaces, building Surrey's music identity, and encouraging music tourism. Short, medium, and long-term actions are planned. This could mean new venues, more funding for artists, and stronger connections between the city and music communities.

Key Issues

  • How can Surrey better support local musicians and music businesses?
  • How can access to performance venues and spaces be improved?
  • How should Surrey establish its music identity and brand?
  • How can music tourism and placemaking be encouraged?

What Happened

The consultation received nearly 2,000 survey responses. The city also conducted 24 external interviews, four community roundtables, two public events, and roundtables with economic development, planning, and private sector developers. The final Surrey Music Strategy was developed based on this input.
