Should the Hébertville-Station Landfill Be Expanded?

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate Housing & Communities
The Lac-Saint-Jean Residual Materials Board wants to add 16 new cells to the Hébertville-Station landfill, more than doubling its size. Why? The site now serves the entire Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region and will reach capacity by 2032. The $107 million expansion would extend operations until 2048.

Why This Matters

Live near Hébertville-Station? This landfill expansion could affect your daily life for the next 25 years. Truck traffic, odours, and groundwater quality are all on the table. The site already handles waste from the entire Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region—this would make it even bigger.

What Could Change

If approved, 24 hectares of new landfill cells would be built in two phases. A new pumping station would manage leachate from the expansion. The landfill's annual capacity of 203,500 tonnes would continue until 2048. Environmental conditions may be imposed on construction, water management, and biogas collection.

Key Issues

  • Should the landfill be expanded to serve the region until 2048?
  • What environmental protections are needed for groundwater and leachate management?
  • How will biogas collection and odour control be managed?
  • What are the impacts on the local community from increased truck traffic?
