Should Sibbald Point Provincial Park Expand Its Sewage Treatment Area?

Official title: Amendments to the Sibbald Point Provincial Park Management Plan (2015) to support sewage treatment system upgrades

Open Community Planning Environment & Climate Housing & Communities
Sibbald Point Provincial Park near Lake Simcoe needs to upgrade its aging sewage system. To do this, Ontario wants to rezone about 2.9 hectares from natural environment to development zone. The change would allow expanding the trailer dump station and sewage treatment infrastructure to handle the park's 330,000 annual visitors.

Why This Matters

Visit Sibbald Point in summer? The park's sewage system is struggling to keep up with demand. Without upgrades, facilities could deteriorate. This rezoning would convert a small natural area to allow better infrastructure—but some may worry about losing green space near Lake Simcoe.

What Could Change

About 2.9 hectares would be rezoned from natural environment to development zone. The trailer dump station could be expanded, relocated, or upgraded. Roads may be widened and queuing lanes added to improve traffic flow.

Key Issues

  • Should 2.9 hectares of natural environment zone be converted to development zone?
  • Is the proposed location appropriate for sewage infrastructure expansion?
  • What impacts might road widening and infrastructure changes have on the park?
