Should Mississauga Convert Employment Lands Near Lisgar GO for Housing?

Official title: Employment Sites Review

Open Community Planning Economy & Jobs Housing & Communities
Mississauga is deciding whether to allow housing on three employment sites near Lisgar GO Station and Burnhamthorpe Road West. These sites currently act as buffers between industrial areas and nearby neighbourhoods. Ontario needs 1.5 million more homes over the next decade, and the city is weighing that pressure against protecting employment lands.

Why This Matters

Live near Lisgar GO or Burnhamthorpe Road West? This could change your neighbourhood. New housing might mean more neighbours and amenities—or more traffic and construction. If you work in the area's industrial zones, this decision affects whether those jobs stay protected from residential encroachment.

What Could Change

Sites 1 and 2 could be rezoned to allow residential development, subject to conditions. This would remove them from protected employment areas. The city now has final decision-making authority after the Province transferred planning powers from the Region of Peel in July 2024.

Key Issues

  • Should employment lands near Lisgar GO Station be converted to allow residential development?
  • How should the city balance housing needs against protecting employment areas?
  • What conditions should apply if conversion is approved?
