Should Belgravia Change Its Streets to Reduce Traffic Congestion?

Official title: Belgravia Traffic Review Engagement

Open Community Planning Housing & Communities Transportation
Edmonton wants to know what's causing traffic headaches in Belgravia. Drivers are cutting through residential streets to avoid congestion, especially during rush hour. The city is looking at both quick fixes and longer-term changes to calm traffic and stop shortcutting.

Why This Matters

Live in Belgravia? You've probably been stuck waiting through multiple light cycles while trains pass. Residents say rush-hour traffic traps them in their own neighbourhood. Shortcutters speed through residential streets, making U-turns and ducking into alleys. If you walk, bike, or have kids playing outside, this affects your safety.

What Could Change

The city could adjust traffic light timing at the LRT crossings so the cycle doesn't reset every time a train passes. Speed bumps, turn restrictions, or one-way streets might be added to discourage shortcutting. Any changes would need Urban Planning Committee approval and funding.

Key Issues

  • Where are the worst traffic congestion and queuing problems in Belgravia?
  • Which streets are being used as shortcuts during rush hour?
  • Should traffic light timing at LRT crossings be changed?
  • What short-term and long-term measures would reduce shortcutting?
