Should a New Pedestrian Bridge Cross the Conestogo River in Wallenstein?

Official title: G2G Rail Trail Pedestrian Bridge

Closed Community Planning Environment & Climate Transportation
The Region of Waterloo wants to build a pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Conestogo River near Wallenstein. The original railway bridge was removed years ago, leaving a gap in the Guelph to Goderich Rail Trail. This $7.5 million project would reconnect the trail, making it easier for cyclists and walkers to travel the full route.

Why This Matters

Use the Kissing Bridge Trailway or G2G Rail Trail? Right now, you have to detour around a gap at the Conestogo River. This bridge would let you bike or walk the full route without interruption. If you live near Wallenstein, West Montrose, or Linwood, this affects your local recreation options.

What Could Change

If approved, construction could begin in 2026. The Region would build an accessible bridge designed to minimize environmental impact on the river. Funding comes from the Region, Township of Wellesley, the G2G Rail Trail organization, and government grants.

Key Issues

  • Which bridge design best balances durability, accessibility, and environmental impact?
  • How should the bridge integrate with the existing trail network?

How to Participate

  1. Review the bridge design alternatives to see the technical drawings of each option evaluated.
  2. Read the public meeting information package and meeting boards to understand the project details.

What Happened

The public meeting and survey have concluded. The Region is now summarizing the input received and will bring a report to Council for approval in early 2026.
