Rules for Importing and Exporting Nuclear Materials
Official title: REGDOC-2.13.2, Import and Export
Why This Matters
This mostly affects nuclear industry companies, not everyday Canadians. But these rules help prevent nuclear materials from ending up in the wrong hands. If you work in the nuclear sector or handle radioactive sources, this directly affects your licensing requirements.
What Could Change
This version is already published and in effect since April 2018. It changed how Canada evaluates export applications for foreign-origin uranium. Companies importing or exporting Category 1 and 2 radioactive sources must follow these updated requirements.
Key Issues
- What are the requirements for importing and exporting nuclear materials?
- How should companies handle high-risk radioactive sources?
- What changed for foreign-origin uranium export applications?
What Happened
The consultation ran from February 2013 to April 2014. Feedback was received from major nuclear industry players including Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power, New Brunswick Power, Canadian Nuclear Association, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, and Cameco. The final document was published on April 27, 2018.
