Quarry Rehabilitation Plan Change - Importing 39 Million Cubic Metres of Soil Near Hayesland
Official title: Amrize Canada Inc. - Changes to the site plan for a pit or quarry
Amrize Canada wants to change how three quarry sites near Hamilton are restored after extraction ends. Instead of leaving lakes, they'd fill the pits with nearly 39 million cubic metres of excess soil from construction projects. The final landscape would become woodland, grassland, and wetland habitats.
Why This Matters
Live near Hayesland or West Flamborough? This could mean years of truck traffic hauling soil to fill these quarries. The change affects what your neighbourhood looks like long-term. If you get water from a private well nearby, soil quality matters.
What Could Change
If approved, Amrize could import 31.4 million cubic metres of soil to two sites and 7.5 million to a third. The final land use changes from lakes to mixed woodland, grassland, and wetland. All three sites would be rehabilitated together as one integrated landscape.
Key Issues
- Should the final rehabilitation change from lakes to woodland, grassland, and wetland habitats?
- Should nearly 39 million cubic metres of excess soil be imported to these sites?
- Is integrating the rehabilitation of three adjacent quarry sites appropriate?
