New Pathway Connection to Macdonald-Cartier Bridge in Gatineau
Official title: Voyageurs Pathway to Macdonald-Cartier Bridge Connector, Jacques-Cartier Parc in Gatineau, Quebec
The National Capital Commission wants to turn an informal dirt path into an official paved pathway in Jacques-Cartier Park, Gatineau. The 100-metre connection would link the Voyageurs Pathway to the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge. About 5 trees would be removed, with replacement plantings provided. Construction is planned for late summer 2025.
Why This Matters
Use this path to bike or walk between Gatineau and Ottawa? Right now it's an unofficial dirt trail. Making it official means better drainage, signage, and year-round access. A notable White Oak tree will be protected during construction.
What Could Change
The NCC would formalize the pathway with proper surfacing, drainage swales, and wayfinding signs. Five trees would be removed but compensated with new plantings. Construction would run from late summer to winter 2025.
Key Issues
- Should the informal desire path be formalized into an official pathway?
- Are the environmental mitigation measures adequate to protect the White Oak tree?
- Is the removal of approximately 5 trees acceptable with compensation plantings?
