How Should Victoria Tackle Climate Change?
Official title: Victoria Climate Action
Why This Matters
Live in Victoria? Climate change is already hitting home with dangerous summer heat and worse storms. This plan will shape how the city helps you switch to electric heating, get around without a car, and stay safe during extreme weather. It also affects how your neighbourhood handles flooding and heat waves.
What Could Change
The feedback will update Victoria's Climate Leadership Plan and create a new Climate Change Adaptation Plan. That could mean new requirements for electric heat pumps in buildings, expanded cycling infrastructure, and programs to help residents prepare for extreme weather. Waste reduction programs may also change to support a circular economy.
Key Issues
- How can the city help residents prepare for extreme heat, storms, and sea level rise?
- What transportation changes would help reduce emissions - better transit, cycling, or EV infrastructure?
- How should the city encourage switching to electric heat pumps in homes and buildings?
- What waste reduction and recycling programs would work best for Victoria?
- How can climate action be fair for marginalized and equity-owed groups?
How to Participate
- This consultation is now closed. An engagement summary will be posted online and presented to Council.
- Review the Climate Leadership Plan (2018) and the 2022 Progress Report to understand Victoria's climate goals.
What Happened
The City collected feedback through an online survey, discussion forum, pop-up events at four community locations and Crystal Pool, plus an open house and online information session. The feedback will inform updates to the Climate Leadership Plan and the new Climate Change Adaptation Plan. An engagement summary will be posted online and presented to Council.
