Have Your Say on Kitchener's 2026 Budget

Official title: Kitchener Budget 2026

Closed Budget Finance & Consumer Housing & Communities
Kitchener is asking residents what they think of the proposed 2026 city budget. The plan includes a 2.2% property tax increase—about $29 more per year for the average home. Water and sewer rates would also go up, bringing the total annual increase to around $117. The city says it's the lowest rate increase in Waterloo Region.

Why This Matters

Own a home in Kitchener? This budget decides how much more you'll pay next year. Renters may see costs passed along too. The $1.8 billion capital plan shapes which roads get fixed, which parks get upgraded, and whether your neighbourhood sees improvements over the next decade.

What Could Change

Property taxes would rise 2.2%, water rates 4.9%, sewer rates 7%, and stormwater rates 7.4%. The city is pausing new staff hires to keep costs down. Over 400 capital projects are planned over 10 years, including $201 million in spending next year. The new Cowan Recreation Centre's operating costs are now in the budget.

Key Issues

  • Is the 2.2% property tax increase appropriate?
  • Are the water and sewer rate increases justified?
  • Are the right infrastructure projects being prioritized?
  • Is the city balancing affordability with service quality?
