How Should Downtown Kitchener Manage Parking for the Next 20 Years?

Official title: Long-Term Parking Strategy

Open Community Planning Housing & Communities Transportation
Kitchener is creating a 20-year parking strategy for downtown. The city wants to know how you use parking—or why you avoid it. They're looking at current supply, demand, and what new options might help.

Why This Matters

Drive downtown to shop, eat, or work? This affects where you park and how much you pay. Live nearby? Parking policy shapes traffic and street life in your neighbourhood. Even if you don't drive, fewer parking lots could mean more housing or green space.

What Could Change

The city could adjust parking rates, hours, or payment options. New parking structures might be built—or existing lots redeveloped. Policies could shift to encourage transit, cycling, or walking instead of driving downtown.

Key Issues

  • How should the city balance parking availability with financial sustainability?
  • What parking improvements or new products should the city offer?
  • How can existing parking supply be used more effectively?
