How Should Burnaby Mountain's Trails Be Managed?
Official title: Burnaby Mountain Trail Management Plan
Burnaby Mountain has 30km of trails used by hikers, mountain bikers, and bird watchers. The city wants to balance recreation with protecting the 590-hectare conservation area's forests, wildlife, and water systems. A spring 2024 engagement gathered initial feedback, and the city is now developing a trail management plan.
Why This Matters
Use the trails for hiking or biking? This plan will shape what's allowed and where. Live nearby? It affects how the mountain's forests and wildlife are protected. The area is also significant to Burnaby's Host Nations.
What Could Change
Some trails may be rerouted, closed, or improved. New rules could limit certain activities in sensitive areas. The plan will guide future investment in trail maintenance and conservation measures.
Key Issues
- How should recreation and conservation be balanced on the mountain?
- Which trails need improvement, rerouting, or closure?
- How can sensitive habitats and ecosystems be protected?
