How Should Alberta Collect Pesticide Sales Data from Vendors?

Official title: Pesticide vendor sales engagement

Open Regulations & Permits Agriculture & Food Environment & Climate
Alberta wants to change how pesticide vendors report their sales data. The province has tracked pesticide sales since 1993, but the current system needs updating. They're asking vendors what barriers they face with a new reporting approach.

Why This Matters

This one's mainly for pesticide vendors and agricultural businesses. But if you care about knowing what chemicals are being used on Alberta farms, better data tracking could mean better oversight. Right now, the province can't easily match sales to specific products.

What Could Change

Vendors may soon have to report pest control product numbers—unique IDs assigned by Health Canada. This would let Alberta track exactly which pesticides are being sold, not just general categories. The Pesticide (Ministerial) Regulations could be updated to require this.

Key Issues

  • What barriers do vendors face in reporting pesticide sales data through the new approach?
  • Should vendors be required to report pest control product numbers for each sale?
