How Should 26 Avenue S.W. Be Redesigned for Cyclists and Pedestrians?

Official title: 26th Ave S.W. Mobility Improvements

Closed Community Planning Housing & Communities Transportation
Calgary asked residents to choose between three options for redesigning 26 Avenue S.W. between 14 Street and 37 Street. The choices were a multi-use pathway, on-street wheeling lanes, or a blend of both. The goal was to make the road safer for everyone—whether walking, cycling, or driving.

Why This Matters

Live in southwest Calgary? This road connects your neighbourhood. Cyclists have flagged safety concerns here for years. Parked cars block sightlines at crossings. The redesign could make your daily commute safer—or change parking on your street.

What Could Change

One of three designs will be built: a separated multi-use pathway, painted on-street bike lanes, or a hybrid approach. This will affect parking availability, road layout, and how the Crowchild Trail bridge crossing looks. Construction follows Phase 1, which was completed in 2022.

Key Issues

  • Should 26 Avenue have a separated multi-use pathway or on-street wheeling lanes?
  • How can cycling safety be improved along this corridor?
  • How should visibility at crossings be addressed given parked cars?

How to Participate

  1. Review the What We Heard Report to see what residents said in Phase 1.
  2. Visit the project webpage for construction updates and next steps.

What Happened

Phase 2 engagement is now closed. The Phase 2: What We Did Report is available, along with high resolution images of the Crowchild Trail bridge renderings. Results were published in Fall 2023.
