Help Shape the Future of St. John's University Area Neighbourhood
Official title: University Area Neighbourhood Plan
St. John's is creating a neighbourhood plan for the area around Memorial University. The plan will guide where new housing gets built, how tall buildings can be, and where shops and services should go. It's part of a $10.4 million federal housing fund aimed at speeding up home construction.
Why This Matters
Live near MUN or the Health Sciences Centre? This plan decides what gets built in your neighbourhood for years to come. Looking for housing in St. John's? New zoning could mean more apartments and townhouses near campus. Walk or bike around the area? New shared-use paths are on the table.
What Could Change
New zoning along Elizabeth Avenue and Newtown Road could allow buildings up to four storeys. The Paton Street and Elizabeth Avenue intersection would become a commercial hub with more shops and services. Highway-oriented businesses on Freshwater Road may eventually become mixed-use developments with housing above retail.
Key Issues
- Should building heights increase to four storeys along Elizabeth Avenue and Newtown Road?
- How should the Paton Street and Elizabeth Avenue intersection develop as a neighbourhood centre?
- Where should new shared-use paths for walking and cycling be built?
- How can Rabbittown's heritage commercial character be preserved while allowing growth?
