Help Shape How the Federal Government Shares Information and Involves Canadians

Official title: Creating Canada’s 6th National Action Plan on Open Government

Closed Policy & Studies Justice & Rights Technology & Digital
The federal government asked Canadians what they want from an "open government" - one that shares information freely, explains its decisions, and actually listens to people. This consultation gathered ideas on four big themes: making it easier for people to participate in government decisions, protecting democracy online, fighting corruption, and designing programs that work for everyone including Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, and marginalized communities.

Why This Matters

Ever feel like government decisions happen behind closed doors? This plan determines how much the feds will actually tell you about what they're doing and why. It also shapes whether your voice matters when policies get made. If you've ever tried to access government data, participate in a consultation, or just figure out what a department is up to, this affects you.

What Could Change

Canada's next two-to-four year plan for open government will include specific commitments on transparency, public participation, and accountability. New rules could require departments to publish more data, consult the public earlier in decision-making, or make it easier for marginalized groups to participate. Anti-corruption measures and corporate transparency requirements may also be strengthened.

Key Issues

  • How can the government make it easier for Canadians to participate in decisions that affect them?
  • How should Canada protect civic freedoms and democracy in the digital age?
  • What measures are needed to fight corruption and increase public trust in government and corporations?
  • How can government programs and services be designed to be truly inclusive for all Canadians?

How to Participate

  1. The consultation is now closed. You can still learn more about open government at Open Canada or read about the National Action Plan on Open Government.
