Help Shape Halifax's Suburban Communities Plan

Official title: Suburban Plan

Open Community Planning Housing & Communities Transportation
Halifax is rewriting the rules for how suburban neighbourhoods grow and change. The city wants to hear what residents value about their communities—and how they'd like to see them evolve. This plan will update zoning, land use policies, and development regulations across 66,000 properties.

Why This Matters

Live in Halifax's suburbs? This plan will shape what gets built near you for decades. Whether it's new housing, local shops, or transit routes—your input now affects what your neighbourhood looks like in 10 years. Renters and homeowners alike should pay attention.

What Could Change

New zoning rules could allow more housing types in suburban areas—think duplexes or small apartments where only single homes exist now. Development regulations across 280 zones may be updated. The plan could also change where commercial uses are permitted and how neighbourhoods connect to transit.

Key Issues

  • What do residents value most about their suburban communities?
  • How should suburban neighbourhoods grow and change?
  • What infrastructure and services need improvement?
  • How should communities connect to the wider Halifax region?
