Help Shape Coquitlam's Urban Forest Strategy

Official title: Urban Forest Management Strategy

Closed Community Planning Environment & Climate Housing & Communities
Coquitlam is creating a plan to protect and grow its urban forest—the trees in yards, streets, and parks across the city. The strategy will guide how the city plants, maintains, and protects trees for years to come. Public input has already been gathered, and a draft strategy is being developed.

Why This Matters

Live in Coquitlam? The trees on your street and in your neighbourhood affect your daily life. They cool your home in summer, clean the air you breathe, and boost property values. This strategy will shape what happens when trees are cut down for development—and whether new ones get planted.

What Could Change

The city may expand tree replacement requirements across all of Coquitlam. A new cash-in-lieu system could require developers to pay when they can't replace trees on-site. The strategy will prioritize incentives and education over new regulations for homeowners.

Key Issues

  • How should the city strengthen tree planting and community involvement?
  • Should tree replacement requirements be expanded city-wide?
  • Should developers pay cash-in-lieu when they can't replace trees on-site?
  • Should the city prioritize incentives and education over new tree regulations?

What Happened

Public engagement has been completed. On November 24, 2025, staff shared what they heard from the community with Council. The results are now being shared with Council Advisory Committees and a Community Working Group. A draft strategy will be developed and shared with Council, kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation, and the community before being finalized.
